VENEZUELA SECOND CITIZENSHIP
Situated on the northern coast of South America, Venezuela is the size of France and Germany put together, and has more than 20 million inhabitants. A leading oil producer and a founding member of OPEC, Venezuela is one of South America's richest countries and enjoys the continent's highest rate of growth. From the snow-capped Andes Mountains in the west and dense Amazonian jungles in the south to the stunningly beautiful Gran Sabana plateau in the east, and the white-sand beaches lining the Caribbean coast, Venezuela offers great diversity.
About the Country
Venezuela was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959.
On the eve of the new millennium, Venezuela sports the first Constitution sanctioned directly by the Venezuelan people. On last December 15th, the new constitutional text, subjected to a referendum, gained the support of 70 % of the electors. The legislative power is exercised by the National Assembly, previously known as the National Congress, made up of deputies elected in each federal entity. The executive power is exercised by the President, the Vice-President and the Ministers, amongst other officials.
The population is about 24 mil people. The official language is Spanish. Predominant religion is Roman Catholicism. The Venezuelan people comprise a combination of European, indigenous, and African heritages. About 85% of the population lives in urban areas in the northern portion of the country. While almost half of Venezuela's land area lies south of the Orinoco River, this region contains only 5% of the population.
The petroleum sector dominates the economy, accounting for roughly a third of GDP, around 80% of export earnings, and more than half of government operating revenues. The Venezuelan economy is extremely oil-dependent, despite efforts at diversification. Venezuela has endured difficult economic conditions in recent years, but strong world oil prices beginning in 1999 helped the country to achieve positive gross domestic product (GDP) growth, forecast to reach 4.5% in 2001.
